Mrs. Taylor did a tremendous job of relating this lesson to previous learning that the students have completed in her classroom over the last class period. When she was introducing the lesson, Mrs. Taylor made the lesson connect to the book that they had read in this class, The Three Little Pigs, and the structures that they had built in groups to protect the plastic pig inside of their structures. This lesson seemed like a wrap up lesson of engineering that the students had participated in for a few weeks.
Mrs. Taylor related this lesson to the background of her kindergarten STEAM class, because she knew her student ability levels. Taylor to teach this lesson. The first one that she used was direct instruction. With this direct instruction she told the kindergarten class exactly what to do on their worksheets, and when they needed to do it. The next instructional strategy that I saw being used was that Mrs. Taylor used observations when she was walking around the room. She would stop periodically at certain students and would give them academic feedback based on the product that was on their worksheets. She also used this to make sure that students were using the correct drawing utensils, and that they had their names on their papers. The third instructional strategy that I saw being used by Mrs. Taylor was prompting questions. She used these questions to keep the students focus on the more important information that was being discussed throughout the lesson. She also used these prompts, to help jump start the students’ thought-process, to get to the desired
