2. In the Maternal Rights Approach, the mother is the only patient and the fetus is not considered a patient, separate from the mother, until after delivery. Therefore, from the medical indications standpoint, the clinical circumstances (risks/benefits) of the mother take precedence over the fetus. From the topic of patient preferences, the emphasis is on “the primacy of the pregnant woman’s right to control what happens to her body.” (OBGYN Risk Research Group, 2009). Any interest in fetal health or life is secondary to the pregnant woman’s right to autonomy. 3. The Professional Responsibility Model, is a combined approach of the Right-to-Life and the Maternal Rights approach. This approach balances Medical Indications (beneficence based), and Patient Preferences (autonomy based), in a more holistic way. The medical indications and preferences of the mother are balanced against the …show more content…

Depending on the balance of risk, benefits, and burdens, prenatal conduct may be discretionary, advisable, prudent, or even obligatory...” (Robertson and Schulman, p. 752). The rights of the mother should not completely be diminished because of the child’s welfare. Yet, the fetus has the right to be born healthy. We have to respect the mother’s wishes, but also the fetus’s wishes to remain healthy. Also, Minkoff and Paltrow have opinions about pregnancy and prenatal harm.…

I feel like because of the principle of nonmaleficence no harm should be done to the fetus. In addition, the principle of justice or equity advocates that the nurse has a responsibility to ensure the fetus as well as the mother are equally considered and fairly treated. I do not believe abortion fairly or justly treats the fetus because it results in the unnecessary death of a human being. I think that there are other options such as adoption that would be a more just and fair way of dealing with an unwanted pregnancy. Although I do have my own personal values and perspective, I also understand the patient’s right to autonomy and the double effect.…

I don’t think that her argument is successful, because that is saying that a pregnant mother has no obligation in keeping her baby healthy until it is born. Most people would agree that mothers should take precautions to keep her baby healthy while in the womb. We look down upon women who drink alcohol, smoke, and do drugs while pregnant because of the detrimental effects, however according to Thomson, the mother should not have an obligation to keep that baby alive and healthy until after the child is born. We look down upon these actions because it can have detrimental effects on the growth and development of the unborn child or can make the child addicted to drugs when born. Under Thomson’s argument, a mother should be allowed to do any actions she wants while pregnant because she doesn’t have a responsibility to the unborn child until she takes the child home and refuses to put it up for adoption.…

Abortion is a big topic that everyone has a different view on it. Such as Thomson who believes that abortion should be a right and that women should not be denied to it because it is their body. Judith Thomson is correct in saying that a woman does not have a duty to preserve the life of her fetus even if it is her genetic child. As the supreme court stated, denying an abortion may lead stressful life and future for the mother. A woman has a right to do what she pleases with her body especially in the case of rape-induced pregnancy.…

The author David Orentlicher made the point that mothers are not required by law to donate an organ to their child, even if their child could not survive without the organ donation. The government would not force the mother to donate an organ, and the government would not be able to charge the mother with child neglect. Why would an abortion be any different? Bodily autonomy, the right to control the uses of one’s body, is a concept that should exist within our society. If a woman makes the personal choice that she is unfit to carry a fetus and raise a child, then the law should not strip her of her right to complete control over her own.…

As well as help provide her with the best assistance if needed after the procedure. The sooner the abortion is done in the earliest weeks of pregnancy, the less developed the fetus would be. As a society, we have a moral duty to stand by the women’s choice no matter how immoral or moral we feel that choice is. The decision to act morally or immorally is on the individual, not on us to judge the action. A woman has free will and choice over her body so therefore, should be able to make the decision without feeling shunned or deemed by society.…
