Case Study: The Ontario Building Code

Good Morning Chair and Committee Members,
In response to County Councillor/ Mayor Arnold’s request for a brief summary on a Building Official’s qualification’s, the following is provided.
The Ontario Building Code (OBC) is a regulation under the Building Code Act, 1992 (BCA). The OBC prescribes the technical requirements for the construction, renovation, change of use and demolition of buildings. It also provides the tools for the administration and enforcement of the BCA and to establish property standards by-laws.
The OBC is essentially a set of minimum provisions respecting the safety of buildings with reference to public health, fire protection, accessibility, structural sufficiency, resource conservation and environmental integrity.
