The MSSP involves the development of an MSS, a cyclic timetable that determines the patient category associated with each block of OR time. At this level, the target is to generate an MSS that balances both beds and nurses daily requirements, while considering surgeons preferences. In this study, it is assumed that surgeons prefer working for certain number of days per week. The model objective function minimizes the weighted sum of peaks in the daily bed occupancy and nurse daily workloads.
At the CMP phase, besides an optimal case-mix pattern, the corresponding resource capacity requirement of each specialty is also determined. Based on the hierarchical relationship between the CMP and the MSSP, the solution of the CMP phase is used as a constraint in the current model (MSSP). By solving the model, the decision of assigning each patient category to day of week, surgery room and time block will be taken. The objective function in the proposed …show more content…
To distinguish between minimization and leveling of bed requirements and nurses’ workloads, a weighted objective function is defined. Where α is the weight of minimization and leveling of bed requirements and 1-α is the weight of minimization and leveling of nurses’ workloads. The weights may for example be related to the benefits or the importance of the reduction and leveling of the required beds capacity relative to the benefits or the importance of the reduction and leveling of both the required beds and nurses capacities. To sum up, the objective function in the proposed model minimizes both the maximal of the required daily beds and the maximal of the daily nurses’ workloads. Minimizing the peaks of the two terms hopefully result in a flat distribution of the bed occupancy and nurses requirements over all days of the
