The Favour Dimitri Arshavin sighed and said, “Alright, I’ll go.” This was the third time in three days that Dimitri volunteered to go shop-lifting. After Alexander Larson, the Swedish expert in burglary, got arrested in attempt to rob a extortionate restaurant, every Alley-Mugger turned down the offer to purloin a thing in his life. Except for Dimitri, of course. Dimitri Arshavin was born and raised in Russia, where he learned to get in and out of things as fast as one’s legs can carry one. But soon enough, tragedy struck. Tommy told his friends and fellow gang-members in their weekly meeting, “Dear members of this very successful club, it is time that we show our full potential. All the gangs of Marfa are weapon-based, but they lack one important aspect of robbery; which is the art of sneakiness. This could come to our advantage. But also to out downfall.” These wise sayings hit Dimitri hard, and he knew that when it came to being sly, he was the …show more content…

It was settled, Dimitri would go today, tomorrow and won’t stop going, until he was

John Updike, author of “Son,” uses an unusual structure of writing to convey a very important point in his story. His story relates to the relationship between a father and a son and uses many generations in his own family as examples. In his story, Updike writes about his feelings and thoughts about having a teenage son and then goes on explaining how his father felt about him and how his father felt about him, and so on. When he first talks about his teenage son, he makes sure that he states the date because the goal of him writing in this order is not to confuse the reader but so that the reader goes in depth in understanding the beliefs and attitudes that are passed down from generation to generation. Updike introduces his story by…

The short story, “All the Troubles of the World,” by Isaac Asimov is a story about the super computer, Multivac and its desires to die because it can no longer stand carrying the weight of society’s problems. In the story, the author effectively expresses the theme of the story which is that no being is superior enough to solve all of the world’s problems through the use of literary devices such as setting, narration, and characterization . In Exile” is a short story written by Anton Chekhov and is based on his real life experiences. This is one of the few stories that arose directly from Chekhov 's extended trip to Sakhalin Island in 1890 (Coulehan). He carefully recorded the misery of the inhabitants of the five-hundred-mile long island by speaking up to 160 people each day (Gale). Chekhov tells a story of several men that are in exile and the exchange that takes place between two of the men. A third-person narrator tells us, “Old Semyon, whose nickname was preacher, and a young tartar, whose name no one knew, were sitting by a campfire on the bank of the river” (Chekhov 111).…

The novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe is a story about a strong but also weak man, Okonkwo, who’s world was turned upside down with the coming of Western religion. He experienced a tragic fall after the Western missionaries arrived. The theory of Western tragedy is that a great man falls from prosperity to disaster, and the concept of the Aristotelian model is that tragedy is an imitation of an action through pity and fear effecting the release of these emotions. The plot of Things Fall Apart and its protagonist (Okonkwo) adhere to the conventions of Western Tragedy and the tragic hero, but they also depart from the Aristotelian model. First of all, the plot of Things Fall Apart and Okonkwo comply with the customs of Western tragedy and the tragic hero.…
