The clinical nursing phenomenon in the case study is the failure of Justin, the charge nurse to communicate with Cindy when she was clearly not meeting the job expectations. Health care workers plays an important role in patients’ safety as reported by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). With the guidance and recommendations by IOM to improve nurses’ work environment, it is the nurse leader responsibility to act upon those recommendations. The charge nurse or manager duty is to provide consistent day to day feedback and counselling about job performance to staff members to improve the quality of work and to avoid problems that might affect high quality patient care. The planning stage is when goals and objectives are defined, policies, procedures and evaluation methods are developed and resources allocated. Nurse Managers has to understand the organization’s mission, philosophy, strategic plan, goals and objectives (Cherry & Jacob, 2014). The goal of most health care organization is to provide high quality patient care and due to Cindy lateness, absenteeism, and unavailability on the unit to perform patient task, the quality of care patients are receiving are lower and also places other staff members in the position to either perform additional assigned patient task, taking time away from other patients or having Cindy’s assigned patient wait which reduces the quality of care they should be receiving. Cindy failure to follow the unit policy in taking vital signs and being absent from the floor to perform patient task falls under failure to follow standard of care which might lead to an issue of negligence …show more content…
Justin failure to document performance problems and counsel employees affects the high quality of care each patient should be receiving and increase the workload on other staff members. There is a likelihood of error if staff member have an increase in workload due to staff shortage (AJN). In addition, Justin and the charge nurse manager should also follow the nursing process as a guide for decision making and problem solving.
