In comparison to smaller and less dense cities in the East coast such as Boston and Philadelphia, New York arts organizations are in a state of competition with each other, striving to be the best location for a certain type of art. BAM must make sure that it is serving the desired content of the individuals ti wants to attract, it must also provide new interesting pieces, performances, and events that will give it a distinguishing edge amongst its competitors. Along with economics circumstances, BAM must also consider the harsh New York winters that often shutdown roads and public transportation systems. BAM must plan accordingly for these impactful weather conditions and set up their calendar to the best of their ability where they are not operating as much when people aren’t leaving their homes. New York City is considered to be the center of art and culture in the United States and in some cases, the world. The night life in New York is one that is seldom stifled because its inhabitants are always looking for something to do within a few blocks or miles. BAM is in the heart of Brooklyn, with proximity to many affluent neighborhoods such as Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, and Carroll Gardens as well as many Manhattan neighborhoods. This geographical location allows BAM to ensure that there will always be an audience looking for something interesting to experience. Also, given its proximity to many Brooklyn elementary schools, high schools and colleges, BAM has the opportunity to attract the youth from ages 3-25. In providing family entertainment and interesting exhibits and shows that can be grounds for a school facilitated field trip, BAM can influence the younger generation into making an effort to experience the arts on their own given a positive interaction from and early age. BAM also has the external benefit of having a mayor who believes deeply in the importance of art. Mayor Bill de Blasio attends many BAM events and his support of the organization as a public figure can be very helpful in raising funds as well as encouraging New Yorkers to take part in the many creative and cultural aspects that BAM has to
