The Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project (BASP) is a Melbourne-based establishment of the Brigidine Sisters that delivers hospitality and support for asylum seekers, and promotes support for the rights of asylum seekers. The program aims to: provide hospitality and support for asylum seekers, actively network with like-minded individuals and groups who are working for justice for asylum seekers and engage in education about the issues for asylum seekers. The Project works with asylum seekers both in detention and in the community. Concerned and caring people of all cultures and generations contribute to the work of the Project (B.A.S.P, 2015). Some of the activities include: organising information sessions to raise awareness of asylum seekers, visiting asylum seekers in detention centers, providing accommodation to asylum seekers, supporting those on bridging visas, assisting a number of asylum seekers who have decided to leave Australia because they had lost hope of being given a refugee status and to intervene with government agencies to secure better outcomes for asylum seekers who face difficulty. It is clearly an incredibly rewarding program for those who help out and contribute, and the asylum seekers greatly appreciate what they do. This program greatly promotes and supports St Brigid’s message simply by the fact that these people are making an impact on others.
