Case Study: The American Medical Association

The healthcare-based organization that I chose is the American Medical Association. The American Medical Association (AMA) is an association of physicians that seeks to promote the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health. It also is dedicated to empowering physicians to continue to provide safer, higher quality, and more efficient care to patients and communities all over the world. For many years, the AMA has had unlimited commitment to using its diverse position and knowledge to shape a healthier future. The organization started out as an association representing “the nation’s doctors,” but actual physician membership rates have sharply declined in recent decades. Estimated membership rates vary from 17-29 percent of all doctors, a significant drop from its highest rate of 90 percent membership (AMA Foundation, 2015).
Part of the reason for the declining number has been due to the AMA’s increasingly political and activist organization. The group’s Office of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse now lobbies for increased alcohol taxes, bans on alcoholic beverage advertising, and other policies aimed at reducing overall consumption of alcohol (American Medical, 2015).
