Case Study: Spectrum Healthcare

Spectrum Healthcare has a hierarchy that is vertical in structure, but with a functional design. Using Weber’s Characteristics of Bureaucracy (1946), similarities can be seen in the organizations bureaucratic structure. The authority hierarchy for Spectrum Healthcare is vertical, though, the span of control is short. There are only five tiers: Board of Directors, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Executive Level (Vice Presidents (VPs and Directors), Managing Level (Managers and Supervisors) and the Core Level (Human Resources (HR) Generalist, Therapists, Medical Assistant, etc.). There is a formal selection for positions through HR, there are formal rules and procedures that must be followed interpersonally and a division of departments. It can …show more content…
The hierarchy is vertical, but with the number of employees being so small, communication and coordination is better accessible. Furthermore, with defined departments, specialization between adolescence and adults and the input from the community, the organization can adapt and adhere to the needs of the community. Again, in 2009 the organization went through a major restructure, where they took on primary care. Instead of only offering mental health services, Spectrum Healthcare is now able to have integrated care services, where they can focus on both the body and mind. A positive result from this alteration can be seen with the organization able to focus on the whole YOU, not just the mind. For example, the recent change to integrated care, allowed Spectrum Healthcare to provide separate offices for adolescence and adults, where each office deals with both mental and physical health. As a result, they can better reach their goal, as focus can now be on the full YOU. It must be noted however, that Spectrum Healthcare is constantly changing and looking forward to staying one step ahead in the healthcare industry the restructuring is never changing, and the tasks are not always narrowly
