As the case was being decided, a major curveball was thrown into the mix when the Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia passed away. He was one of the nine Justices hearing the case and would have broken any tie decisions. Due to the death of Scalia, when it came time for the Supreme Court to make its decision, there was an even 4-4 split in the votes and his ninth vote would have broken said tie. Due to the fact there was a tie decision Abood v. Detroit Board of Education would not be overruled. Since the case was set in a tie it would not become a legal precedent for future cases.…
Wedgefield Area School Dispute Leaders in Orange County for the better part of a decade have been attempting to get approval for a new school in the neighborhood of Wedgefield, due to major population of the schools in the surrounding area. While the residents of this community wanted a solution but they did not want it to be near their homes because it would impact some of the activities that they enjoyed due to living in a more open area. The Lower Merion School District provided laptop computers to high school students as part of a one to one program. The program allowed the students to bring home a laptop computer provided by the school district. Unbeknownst to the students or their parents the laptop computers were all programed with spyware that gave the school district access to the computers’ webcam. The goal of the one to one program was to increase the connectivity between home and school for students. People that are unfamiliar with the mind of a criminal cannot fathom the factors that led to the crime. When a crime is committed, the perception of the individual tends to become negative causing the loss of empathy and understanding from his or her peers. Most people fail to think extensively about ways in which educational background contributes to a crime committed. People assume that individuals engage in criminal activity because of their specific race and background or because they lack the presence of something that is related to their crime.
