It is a long-term condition that causes a shortness of breath in the person affected. Often it is caused by the destruction of the lung tissues in the alveoli which means that the airways are not able to hold their shape properly when the person exhales. Due to this the person is able to exchange gases less efficiently. The most prominent cause of emphysema is smoking as the tobacco found in the cigarettes damage the air sacs within the lung. This is generally done in 3 main ways: medication, therapy and surgery. Medications consists of bronchodilators, inhaled steroids and antibiotics. Bronchodilators are drugs that ease the symptoms of emphysema such as coughing and shortness of breath which are caused the constricted airway. Inhaled steroids are used to reduce the inflammation of the airway hence reducing shortness of breath. Antibiotics are used in case other bacterial infection occur in the person to ensure there are no other risk to the person.
There are a wide range of therapies available for to treat the symptoms such as pulmonary rehabilitation, nutrition therapy and oxygen therapy. Pulmonary rehabilitation consists of exercise that help the patient to control their breathing whereas oxygen therapy is when the patient is administered oxygen through a tubing in their nostrils and is used when oxygen levels are low.
Nutrition therapy is a more general form of therapy and works by ensuring that the patient has gotten sufficient nutrition, vitamins and minerals, for a healthy functioning
