People at higher risk for developing active tuberculosis were the elderly, infants, and people with weakened immune systems (examples were human immunodeficiency virus, chemotherapy, diabetes, or certain medications), Fitzgerald (2009). Other risk factors were those people which had frequent contact with people who had tuberculosis, poor nutrition, and lived in crowded or unsanitary living conditions, Ellner (2011). Pulmonary symptoms were usually chronic and may have been present for weeks to months, Bare (2010). Private P, A.B. stated his symptoms were present for five months, which was why his pulmonary tuberculosis had advanced and developed into complications of pleural effusion.

The most common signs and symptoms of pleural effusion were shortness of breath and chest pain, sometimes there are no symptoms, Broaddus (2010). Since pleural effusion was a manifestation of another illness, the risk factors were those of the underlying disease such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, lung cancer, congestive heart failure, and drug reactions, Clark (1998). Other risk factors were chest injury or trauma, abdominal infections or pancreatitis, liver disease, radiation therapy and surgery especially involving heart, lungs, abdomen and organ transplantation, Broaddus
