For 4 hours we took a table and placed it by the entrance to let customers know that they were able to receive a shot in the store if they would like one. My primary responsibility was to help the customers fill out the paper work in regards to insurance and any known allergies they may have. At the end of completing the paperwork, I was able to go back and see firsthand how to go in the system to get insurance companies to cover the cost of the shot. Also, while on rotations I was able to make several compounding medications. Although the calculations were done for you, it was good practice to be able to observe and understand the concept of how to actually make the desired drug. Another reason why this was also beneficial was because I also learned how to add flavoring to certain medications to assist patients with taking them. In addition, I was also able to take down prescriptions over the phone from incoming doctor’s offices and for one office in particular I was able to calculate the patient compliance rate for one of the nurses. Each day as I filled prescriptions, I realized that the majority of the ones I filled to my amazement were covered under the free prescription program. I found it very intriguing that in today’s society there aren’t many things that are provided absolutely free especially a billion dollar company. One of the main hindrances of ensuring a patient takes a prescription sometimes is the fact that some may not have the money to cover the cost.
