Case Study 1: Julia
Talking to Mrs. Smith:
1. Some of Julia’s main strengths as they relate to her language and communication abilities are:
• Her responsiveness to both you and your husband’s voices, gazes and things presented to her
• Her ability to let you know when she is ready and willing to interact and communicate
• Her sociability and overall cheerful demeanor

2. Some things that I noticed Julia has some difficulty with are:
• Oral-motor muscle control, meaning that she has difficulty coordinating and maintaining the muscle planning and control needed when she is feeding. This could lead to issues later on when Julia begins communicative verbally.

I really think that Julia would benefit most from a family-centered therapy approach, meaning that you and Mr. Smith will play an important role in helping Julia to meet her goals. You two know Julia best and are very conscientious of her wants and needs. Furthermore, you are highly motivated to see her succeed and provide her with a loving and caring environment. I aimed to establish goals that tailored to your specific concerns as they pertain to Julia and to make sure that they fit into your daily routines. That being said, I would like to work on improving both you and Mr. Smith’s responsiveness and attention to Julia’s attempts at engagement and acts of protest during feeding. Building awareness of her cues and providing you with techniques to respond to those cues will aid in improving feeding sessions, will help lower your frustration levels, and will allow you and Mr. Smith to maximize your interactions with Julia, which will aid in her speech and language

These behaviors yield undesirable consequences, which perpetuates a deadly cycle in which Jane’s depressive symptoms are amplified and contribute to further dysfunctional behavior.…
