Medicare and Medicaid do not cover acupuncture, they only like to cover other sessions to cure their pain. This is because not a lot of people know the facts about acupuncture. If an insurances client gets into a wreck, like a car accident, most insurance companies cover physical therapy sessions, none of them really go to acupuncture. Dependent on where the pain is on the body, the insurance company will provide the patient with the service they think is best for their client, which is hardly ever acupuncture. In Washington state, acupuncture sessions can be anywhere from $15 to $135 dollars, dependent on if it's the patients first session and if the patient goes to a highly trained acupuncturist. Acupuncture is mainly described as a system of complementary medicine that involves pricking the skin or tissues with needles, used to alleviate pain and to treat various physical, mental, and emotional conditions. Which is normally what people think of when they think of acupuncture, with the needles poking into injured skin. But there's also utilizing friction (rubbing of heat on skin), suction or cupping (the process of drawing blood from the body by scarification and the application of cupping), application of heat (holding a heating pad to the injured part), pressure or acupressure (applying pressure to the injured area), or electromagnetic pulses (little shocks to the nerves and muscles in body). All of these do work when trying to relieve chronic pain, but acupuncture with the needles is the main way to get rid of chronic pain fast. Starting with utilizing friction, it's called a friction massage. A friction massage can be self done if you are able to reach the injured area. The way patients can do this is by rubbing gently back and forth over the inflamed tendon at the point of greatest tenderness. Your strokes should be perpendicular to the fibres of the tendon — like strumming a guitar string, this is pretty simple. This is hard for some patients because it is hard to massage a muscle that's really tight on their own body. The pain that comes with this is more of a good-pain feeling,

Instead of using ultrasound, diathermy has been used because it heats up the tissues of the patellar region. Another type of treatment that could be used is eccentric exercises. In cases of patellar tendinopathy, the patellar tendon becomes weak, and strengthening the tendon helps it become stronger. Doing those exercises might be painful, but “some pain during exercise therapy can lead to good treatment results when pain settles within 24 hours and does not increase day by day” (Zwerver, 2008).
