Piaget’s theory importantly shows that children between 7-11 (stage three) can usually only fully understand concrete situations (Wadsworth, 1996). So, in distressing and unknown environments they can struggle to understand the new and independent idea. Though when they progress to stage four they can start to relate to and understand ‘abstract’ and more complex ideas.
Another important theory established by Fritz Heider is the ‘Balance Theory’. The basis of this theory is cognitive balance and how to achieve it, but it is also an environmental theory (Munroe, 2007).
