Company Background

PetSmart was founded in 1986 and 1987 at first it was called Pet Food Warehouse in Arizona by Jim and Janice Dougherty. By 1988 they had a total of seven stores and were helping animal welfare groups, by holding fundraisers and events. In 1989 they changed their name from Pet Food Warehouse to PETsMART® and opened the first grooming salons and small pet department. In 1992 the 50th store was opened along with the adoption center and animal clinic. In 1993, PetSmart went public with their stock then one year later they opened their 100th store, and began in store training, along with forming the PetSmart Charities. In 1996 they opened eight stores in Canada only to open their 500 th store two years later in 1998. In 2000 they introduced their vision statement: To provide Total Lifetime Care SM for every pet, every parent, every time—which we do by offering superior products, unmatched services and superb customer service to pet parents and their pets. Between 2002 and 2004 they introduced Pets Hotels and launched a loyalty program Pet Perk. In 2007 they opened their 1000th store and 2008 their 100th hotel, soon they parented with GNC and Martha Stewart.
