Simmons and Sutter examined the impact of the installation of Doppler radar on the quality of tornado warnings and occurrence of tornado casualties. The researchers provided information on what Doppler radars were used, such as the Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD) and WSR-88D radars. The NEXRAD radar system has 159 radars in the United States (U.S.) and overseas, as well as 121 radars installed at National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast offices. The NEXRAD system is used to monitor and forecast storms and precipitation levels. These scientists made an assumption that improved tornado warnings are beneficial from the NEXRAD radar. Increased accuracy and warning times from Doppler radar should let people have more time to take precautions.
