Case Study on Alcohol misuse at the workplace

Summary The following is a case study of a male employee, drinking beers at work while working on a case study. He was addressed by his employer, as a result of his conduct. Even though he appears to be fully functional, his employer was not happy and is concern about his employee wellbeing as well as his industry reputation. The employee sees alcohol used among employees during work as an expensive problem for the industry. Drinking alcohol while doing a case study, can host drinking problems for the employer. To illustrate the point even, socializing during Christmas parties, happy hours and other work activities are contributing factors that could create alcohol misuse within the workplace.

Impact Injuries The view about impact injuries cause by alcohol consumption at the workplace is associated with misuse of one’s motor skill. In fact, “… explanation linking substance misuse to occupational injuries is based on the hypothesis that persons more likely to misuse alcohol ... may be more likely to engaged in other behaviors that increase risk of injuries” (Rachand, R., Pomeroy, A., & Arkes, J. (2009). Employees who drink while working are much likely to get addicted to alcohol. To prevent, an addiction screening employee can assist significantly with employees’ behavior. Low employee morale The use of alcohol at the workplace has shown work related problems such as low employee morale. Alcohol in the workplace has affected employee work interpersonal relationship. Moreover, employee who use alcohol in the workplace “The cost of alcohol use in the workplace is multifaceted and considerable and can be caused by reduction in the productive workforce from premature mortality or morbidity, absenteeism due to alcohol-related sickness, and reduced productivity while at work” (Dale & Livingston 2010).Given that alcohol is still proven to be linked to risky behavior and low morale. When compared the impact of the problem with drinking alcohol at the workplace during work hours. According to Institute of Alcohol Studies (2014), Lancaster University found that there is a robust positive link between opening hours and absentee. There survey on alcohol misuse reports in 2007 that “third of employees admitted to having been to work with a hangover, 15% reported having been drunk at work, 1 in 10 reported hangovers at work once a month; 1 in 20 once a week, work problems resulting from hangovers or being drunk at work included difficulty concentrating; reduced productivity; tiredness and mistakes,[and] The majority of employers (77%) interviewed identified alcohol as a major threat to employee wellbeing and a factor encouraging sickness absence”( Institute of Alcohol Studies 2014). Result from this study indicates that alcohol misuse at the workplace has influence impact injuries, cause low employee morale, jeopardized the productivity. The study perceptions are that alcohol drinking at the workplace has impact negative behaviors. Anecdotal message showed the severity of the misuse of alcohol at work, but statistical study showed that there are more likely to destroy an industry
