The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill was a tragic mishap on BP’s behalf, killing several rig workers and having many other outreaching effects. The amount of crude oil that was spilled into the Gulf of Mexico over the course of approximately three months was 4.9 million barrels of oil and to go along with that, 2 million gallons of chemical dispersants to the Gulf. A major group of crude oil, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) was discovered along the northern shorelines of the Gulf of Mexico. PAH effected several species of wildlife including Dolphins, the Tundra Peregrine Falcon, and shrimp. PAH or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, concentration levels in May 2010 were higher than in May 2011, a mere five times higher, which indicates…
(Barry 1). In the American documentary film of Midway Island, the film maker took the risk and tested the presence of Bisphenol - A on herself, to her surprise the result was positive (Sun). The harmful effect of these plastic toxins is well documented and raise the alarm for the need of an immediate action (“The Problem with Marine Debris”…
The Oil and Gas division is a chief driver of Canada’s economy, denoting nearly a quarter of Canadian export and devoting more than 500,000 people throughout the country. Yet, Canada might not grasp the full significance of its crude oil and natural gas resources due to a lack of infrastructure to transport the extracted resources to refineries in North America and elsewhere. This infrastructure confronts results in eastern Canadian refineries trusting predominantly on imported foreign sources of crude oil. Thus, TransCanada has argued to build oil export port in Quebec as segment of its projected Energy East pipeline. TransCanada Pipelines proposed transformation of a portion of its Canadian Mainline pipeline is estimated to distribute substantial…
The Surfrider Foundation creatively exemplifies what human pollution and carelessness is resulting in such as creating compelling ads like “Fossil, Bag”. Trash islands, which is a result from human pollution, clutters the oceans as well as contaminates marine biology with plastic and plastic components. Unfortunately, humans will continue to contribute to the trash islands and the marine life epidemic by throwing their plastic products out the window and onto the ground as they live their irresponsible lives. The vicious cycle of human carelessness is resulting into the consumption of their very own trash: plastic bags and plastic products. The more that plastic is produced and dumped into the ocean, the more prevalent plastic really is within human daily life, as well as inside…
How to Change Your Oil 101 Oil changes are an important step in maintaining a car’s engine performance and efficiency. Although oil changes are important on cars, they can also be performed on anything with an engine. This includes, but is not limited to, snow blowers, lawn mowers, gas-powered generators, motorcycles, and ATVs since they all require oil for lubricant. In this paper we will focus on changing the oil in an automobile. Changing your own oil is a simple process that can be accomplished easily by gathering items needed, draining the old oil, and adding new oil.…
As a state, Texas has one of the most interesting histories. From the very beginning, when natives were in control of North America, to the present, we have been very influential in every state, country, or region. About three decades after the civil war in 1901, the Texas economy change drastically with the discovery of oil on January tenth. From that day, Texas progress from a rural, agricultural state to a modern industrial giant was off the charts. Texas Oil Boom and the Gusher Age were some other names for this discovery and the years after it.…
On March 24, 1989, one of the worst recorded oil spills occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska (Seitel, 2011, p.100). A 987-foot tanker from Exxon Mobil Corp., the Exxon Valdez, spilled 260,000 barrels of oil after the intoxicated ship captain “ran aground on a reef 25 miles southwest of the port of Valdez” (Seitel, 2011, p.101). The oil spill damaged over 1,300 square miles of coast line and caused the death of various sea life, including over 4,000 Alaskan sea otters (Seitel, 2012, p.101). Exxon Mobil’s public relations approach to the crisis received criticism and the mistake affected the company nearly twenty years later.…
Before Texas experienced its historical and great Oil Boom in 1901, Texas was deserted with only minor businesses in small towns and great acres of farm land. After the great Oil Boom first hit in Beaumont, the Texas landscape and the small towns in Texas changed dramatically. The oil industry grew rapidly and effected Texas and the people living in small towns economically, environmentally, and personally. Oil became the new “black gold” everyone wanted to get their hands on, but had its own price to pay no one expected. Before the great Oil Boom small towns such as Beaumont, were greatly affected by the rapid oil production.…
The Keystone XL Pipeline is the proposed last segment of the greater Keystone Pipeline project owned by TransCanada which would run from Hardisty, Alberta (in Canada) to Steele City, Nebraska. The proposed pipeline would carry oil sands from Canada to refineries on the Gulf Coast (Cama and Wilson 14).This pipeline would utilize a bitumen-harvesting process which is more environmentally damaging and less efficient than the tradition oil drilling process. Additionally, the pipeline has been controversial due to the environmental hazards tin its operation (Issitt). One of the major groups of protestors to the Keystone Pipeline are Native American Tribes including the Northern Arapaho Tribe, Yankton Sioux Tribe, and Blackfeet tribe. Their feelings…
The Cuyahoga River fire of 1969. The Love Canal catastrophe in 1977. The Bhopal, India disaster of 1984. These incidents were defining moments in my youth that ultimately influenced my choice of careers. However, if I had to point to a single, seminal moment that most affected my desire for environmental conservation and restoration, it was the early 1970s public service announcement (“Keep America Beautiful”), which featured a Native American chief shedding a tear as trash is thrown out of a moving car and lands at his feet.…
I have a dream of a future where humans take care of the environment. A society that takes pride in keeping the air clean, our natural habitats untouched, and our oceans free of pollution. It is time to become more educated about how our environment is damaged by contamination caused by fracking, oil drilling, and raw sewage. The pollutants leak into the land, enter the water systems, and air at nearby sites.…
The Impacts of Discovering Oil Crowds were cheering, oil was splattering, and dreams were coming true when “Black Gold” was finally found. Money was soon to come in the pockets of the wildcatters and their families. The first amount of oil that was found in Texas was in Spindletop. They found the oil in the year 1901 in January. Many people wanted to find oil, so they packed up their stuff and moved to boom towns.…
During the trip our counselors continuously reminded us of the impact we have on the health of our planet and that we, today’s youth, are the key to preserving it for even further generations of all living organisms to enjoy. That message resonated with me, and it inspired me to strive to be that difference in the world. I want to help solve the problems affecting our environment to help better it for people and the wildlife alike. I’ve chosen to major in Biology to get a better understanding of how the organisms of the world function and what their needs are, so we can develop new methods of preserving their habitats. I want to work towards a future filled with prosperity and affluence of health in our ecosystems.…
Since I was a small child, I've always loved helping the planet that we live on. My passion for sustainable practices and conservation has inspired me to pursue a career in natural resources and sustainability. I also believe that there needs to be an even bigger push to show the public how endangered our planet is. I always do my best to educate myself and others about the greenest way to live. Although I am just one person, I believe my influence can lead to a greener society…
In 1979, the Pacific Oil Company began its relationship with the Reliant Corporation, an association of immense consequence for both organizations. Lewicki chronicled this case in Lewicki, Saunders, and Barry (2010, pp. 582-609). Two multinational industrial giants, these companies had much to gain through a contract for the sale of vinyl chloride monomer from the Pacific Oil Company (or simply Pacific) to the Reliant Corporation (or simply Reliant). When representatives from the companies went to renegotiate the contract in 1984, a series of arduous deliberations started that would last for two years and culminated in an impasse for Pacific’s management.…
