Findings from this study suggest an urgent need to redefine student involvement for the non-traditional student. There needs to be a separate definition of involvement for non-traditional students who do not have the time or capacity to engage in co-curricular activities but are persisting to graduation. Educators must be strategic in engaging non-traditional students in the classroom as that is where most involvement occurs. Interactions with peers and faculty are how non-traditional students stay involved and bring a wealth of life and work experience with them when they enter higher education (Compton et al., 206). Moreover, administrators must also review additional ways to support non-traditional student involvement.…

The “Ban the Box” movement was started by the civil rights movement group “All of Us or None,” in 2004. The initial goal of the movement is to have the portion of a formal job application that asks about criminal history removed. As of 2015, nineteen states have removed the question regarding conviction history from job applications. Alabama has yet to join the other nineteen states in following the “Ban the Box” movement. The purpose of the movement is for employers to choose their prospective employees based on job skills and qualifications instead of past convictions.…

With so many different people working in the Office of Student Engagement and so many different activities going on during the week, it is very easy for the office to become disorganized. That is why I, along with Patrick’s graduate assistant Jordan, took part in a massive undertaking by organizing everything in the office, from the storage closet filled with a variety of supplies, to the drawers that were filled with papers and items that should have been removed a long time ago. After cleaning out the closet and drawers, and removing anything that was no longer usable (e.g. expired food, old papers, etc.), I decided to try and put labels on the more important items being stored, in hopes that those items will remain in the same location so they will be easy to locate in the future. I also tried to keep items that were used for the same programs together. For instance, every item that was used around Halloween, Christmas, or Easter was given its own respective space.…

Define the problem – A problem I am aware of in my community at UT, that interested me, is the need to implement a way to help students achieve academically and socially. I believe it is the university’s responsibility to keep students excited, involved, and engaged, both inside and outside of the classroom. I feel like a lot is expected of college students, meanwhile juggling their own responsibilities, they work hard, stressful hours that can be tough. They deserve all the benefits and extras that a college campus can offer.…

Whether it was taking time out of my day to attend the first general body meeting of debate team or filling out the application for National Society of Collegiate Scholars, I began my success by putting my foot out into the unknown without fully expecting what I was going to get out of it. Having the adventurous mind to try out new things has opened my mind greatly to leadership opportunities, service, scholarship, and social justice. Topics and initiatives that I would have never thought to be conversing about or partaking in are now major parts of my everyday life. Through NSCS and every other organization or club I’m a part of, I have become a more active, accommodating, and out spoken person. To a first generation college student, obtaining success in college can often seem like a daunting task and many might shrivel in fear of the expectations.…

Foster youth who age out of the system often do not attend higher education (Brandford & English, 2004; Wolanon, 2005). “Less than 11% of children that have been in the foster care system will go on to college… [and]… the Federal government also helps children who were in foster care in their teen years through the Fostering Adoption to Further Student Achievement Act” (Rowan, 2014). Despite receiving financial aid to cover the cost of education, many youth continue on after care to obtain jobs in low-income industries instead of attending college. Understanding why this lack of higher education enrollment and retention occurs can become the first step in creating programs and resources geared to help assist these youth into succeeding.…

Personal Philosophy of the Student Affairs Field Reflecting on my personal college experience and those of my peers, I believe that the field of Student Affairs provides a unique and even essential opportunity to help shape the experience that student’s receive within the university setting. I strongly believe that students gain more from their college experience learning and growing outside of the classroom rather than inside. Self-discovery and personal exploration through extra-curricular activities and interpersonal interactions guide students through their academic careers and develop who they wish to become as an adult facing the “real world.” Student Affairs professionals help to ensure that each student begins their track to self-discovery…

Student development theories are important to learn and to incorporate into any student affairs professional’s practice. In order to do so, one needs to learn about the wide breadth of possible theories, some which are applicable to many fields and others are more specialized. For example the highlights I learned from class are things I found applicable to my current job and future career goals as an academic advisor. Some of these highlights were theories that focused on understanding how general student populations think or what issues they may be experiencing in various stages of development.…
