Tobacco smoking could be a major public health problem and a number of other preventive public health methods have been enforced. It is becoming clearer that smoking isn 't harmless to psychological state, and should even worsen mental illness or contribute to its origin.
Participants
The study resided among the Geelong Osteoporosis Study, analysis originally designed to analyze the medicine of osteoporosis in Australian woman, however recently distended to look at both psychiatric illness and non-psychiatric diseases. A total of 1043 women (aged 20–93 years) participated in a psychiatric evaluation during the period 2004–2007, thus achieving the inclusion criteria for this study.

Among the 671 women aged 20 84 years with no history of major depressive disorder initially and who were therefore qualified for analysis in this surveying group study, 51 developed major depressive disorders and 620 remained major depressive disorder-free during follow-ups.
Statistics
In the case control study, participants were selected as cases (people with major depressive disorder) or controls (people with no major depressive disorder), and exposure to smoking was documented for each group. Age was defined as the age at major depressive disorder began for cases and baseline age for controls, and was categorized into age groups for analysis.
In the group study, participants with no history of major depressive disorder initially were selected, categorized as current smokers or not, and monitored until a first major depressive disorder episode or until the end of the follow-up period.
