Case study #5
In a classroom environment, there are many different interruptions and distractions. These distractions can range from people in the classroom to the problems that occur out side of the classroom but are brought inside of the classroom environment. Most of the class time is used defusing situations and giving the class instructions instead of the class actually being taught new information. In this case study there is a teacher who goes by Helen Franklin. She starts having trouble in her classroom due to a parent who volunteers to help with the children. Helen teaches a first grade class at Roosevelt Elementary school. She teaches a class that has mixed academic …show more content…
There are three stages on how to address the issue of racism in your classroom. First you must remain calm for the duration of the time. When it’s time for action the teacher must address the issue explicitly and make sure that what you are saying is understood. Confront the behavior and model the appropriate behavior that needs to be used inside and outside of the classroom. If you see that this is a big problem in your classroom you should address the situation as quickly and firmly as you can. In the case study, Helen does not talk to the parent about the issue and it goes unresolved. Helen just seems to go over how she wants the situation to go before she lets the students into the classroom for the day.The parent refused to work with the low-ability children who were also a majority of the minority group. Helen is trying to understand if it’s just because the parent wants to work with the smarter children or if she is in fact being prejudice towards these children. In an article that I read there is quite written by Paul Bress in 2007. This quote says, “ People are entitled to entertain any thoughts they want in their brains. However, when it comes to behavior, teachers need to impose a tight reign on racism. We need to create classrooms in which everyone is treated equally and …show more content…
The classroom that Helen has is most commonly referred to as a “open classroom” which meant that the classroom had a lack pf structure. The students in her class are free to do as they please in whatever way that they choose. When given assignments they are allowed to pick whichever worksheet they want to start on. The only rule is that you cannot be working on the same worksheet and the person next to you. The open classroom setting focuses on the students learning by performing the task on their own/ at their own pace with occasional help from the teachers and/or the parent volunteers. This classroom contains no lessons that are taught to the class as a whole, no standardized test that the students have to take, and the classroom has no detailed curriculum. The students are free to move around the room as they please and work wherever makes them feel the most comfortable. Other teachers believed that this wasn’t a good way to teach the students because it lacked the structure that most of the other classrooms provided to the
