The presentation on bail reform was very interesting, I learned a lot about JCCG. Chief Justice Rabner formed the joint committee in 2013. More than 30 members have joined, representing a broad cross section of CJ stakeholders. Their main goal is to reduce cases with delayed trails. They want to enforce speedy trails, presumption of innocence until proven guilty, and more.…

Private prisons lobby for harsh criminal laws to increase profit at the cost of inmates’ wellbeing. In 1998 election cycle, private prisons contributed $540,000 to 361 politicians (Anderson, 2009). Bribes were also used as method to encourage private prisons. In 2009, two Pennsylvania judges received $2.6 million to oppose alternative and lenient sentences for juveniles (Anderson, 2009) Incarceration negatively affects recidivism rates (Anderson, 2009).…
Prisons are a world of their own with a social and economic system that utilizes their population, the prisoners. The severity and intensity of prisoners’ rehabilitation is a controversial topic. There is a long standing history of neglect and abuse of power, victimizing the physical and mental health of inmates. This corrupt and inhumane prison system is perpetuated by the labor system, its profits garnering support from various corporations and organizations. The labor system was built not to rehabilitate, but to exploit prisoners in the interest of business whilst preying on marginalized communities.…
Since 1989 big private corporations such as Corrections Corporation of America and GEO have been funneling money into politics with more than $10 million directly to candidates and roughly $25 million in lobbying. These big companies are not the usual suspects of lobby efforts like their counterparts Big Pharma and Big Oil, these companies are the two biggest contributors to the third, silent influencers of American politics, Private Prisons (Cohen). Private prisons take responsibility for sixteen percent of federal prisoners and six percent of state prisons according to the ACLU. With a prison population of 2,220,300 Americans, private prisons are becoming one of the largest industries in the nation (Bureau of Justice Statistics).…
Juveniles in the U.S commit various kinds of crimes; ranging from theft to something extreme such as murder. When these juveniles are tried in court for murder they are often tried as adults, not as a child. These juveniles are often sentenced to life without parole. Many individuals believe that this is the only way to punish them. However, juveniles should be eligible for parole and a chance to show that they can change.…
That didn’t happen with his case, parole board kept ignoring his hearing. Rodriguez had good conduct, studied to do mechanic shop. Also, was a great remodel in the prison. There are no chances for Rodriguez to get out of jail anytime soon. He’s spent his life pretty much in person, and even with a good conduct will still stay behind bars.…
There is a humanitarian crisis happening in the United States right now and it is getting no coverage. Hundreds of thousands of people, some as young as 14, are having their rights and freedoms stripped away, and in some cases in no fault of their own. These people are then forced into places around the county where they are surrounded by violent people who will take advantage of them at every turn. If they ever get to leave those places they will on average leave with a damaged psyche and a bleak future. This is the United States prison system and it is broken.…
Hilton 5 Dakota Hilton Criminal Justice Dr. Stringer Topic Paper American Prison System The process of leaving prison can be very difficult, especially for ex-offenders and felons that have had to serve lengthy sentences. Transitioning from a life inside of prison to a life outside can be difficult for some people. Some inmates commit crimes at a young age and are sentenced to a lengthy incarceration.…
In the mid-1990s, there was a dramatic shift in our correctional system. Instead of local, state, and federal authorities maintaining commissaries, many tax payers funded correctional facilities are awarding contracts to their buddies who offer the largest kickbacks. In a lot of these corruption cases, the Keefe Group seems to be the go-to partner for most Correction Commissioners. In fact, the scandal led to the indictment of Florida's Correction Commissioner Christopher Epps and business person Cecil McCrory. Taxpayers Should Speak Up As a tax paying citizen, I'm appalled by the lack of transparency within our correction facilities.…
