Mass Communication Midterm
Matt Prince states that his duty to Taco Bell as a brand is to protect and promote it. Essentially he means that his job has two components. The first job is to creatively and strategically entice consumers. His second responsibility is to defend the brand when it falls under scrutiny. The latter is often paid less attention to when someone thinks of a job as a brand promoter and communications manager, as it can be slightly less appealing. It requires problem-solving and a strong work ethic under pressure. An example of protecting a brand can be seen when looking back to the E. coli outbreak at Chipotle in 2016. It is highly compatible with the First Amendment, Americans basic right to press without censorship. The Fourth Estate is in large part attributed to philosopher Thomas Carlyle who stated that “"Burke said there were Three Estates in Parliament; but, in the Reporters' Gallery yonder, there sat a Fourth Estate more important far than they all." It was Carlyle's belief that the press was a central part of an efficient democracy, which prior to his and Edmund Burke's establishment of it as an estate, was overlooked. Of the estates, the fourth has evolved in the most drastic proportions. Originally the Fourth Estate referred to newspapers which eventually was taken over by radio, which in turn was taken over by tv, then broadcast television to cable to streaming services and finally social media. 2017 had a history-altering election that provides strong evidence that the influence of the Fourth Estate is only becoming more and more prevalent. She told us that not everyone knows how to communicate and that nothing sets a project back like two people unable to communicate. Communication professionals bridge the gap between other professionals in the same setting who lack strong communications skills. An efficient communicator can hear two sides of something and can find a middle ground. In addition to finding a middle ground, they can successfully convey the message of one party to the other, in much the same way a language translator tells one person in one language what another means in a second
