Josh J Case Study

Concepts In the period of early adolescence, youth face various concepts in development. In the case study, Josh J. has many protective factors that will aid him in making healthy decisions in later development. In this section, the concepts that were reviewed in relation to Josh J. are depression and suicide, sexual decision-making, substance use and abuse, bullying, and his relationship with school. Depression and suicide. Josh J. is beginning to express a need for autonomy from families and wanting to spend more time with friends. At this point in time, Josh J. is involved in an array of activities including AAU basketball, school basketball and an eighth-grade student taking high school level courses. From what Josh J. and his parents told the researcher, Josh J. is doing well in school but will have time periods where he is not turning in his work, leading to him having a below C average in a class. Although Josh J. may not be showing any signs of depression or suicide now, the lack of sleep and the stress from school and basketball can lead to symptoms of depression and suicide later in development. Hutchison (2015) identified poor school performance, truancy, social withdrawal, and changes in sleeping and eating patterns as symptoms of depression. As mentioned before, Josh J. has many protective factors in his life, leading him to be less likely to show signs of depression or suicide throughout adolescence.
