The book by Rachel Janney and Martha Snell titled, Behavioral Support, was a great read for any teacher, administrator, or other school staff member. Behavioral Support provided many suggestions for students who need more positive behavioral support in school to help them be successful. The text gave me more insight on how behavior is learned and can be changed. The text posed the following question, “Why do people act in ways that are difficult to understand, disturbing to others, and even destructive to self, others, and property?”(Janney, Snell, 5). This question really made me reflect on my own experiences as a teacher in working with students who have been distracted and/or hard to understand.…

In today’s educational field we tend to lose and forget about the children with behavioral challenges. Many educators believe that they are disrespectful, out of control and beyond any type of help, (they just want attention). In reality, this is not true, there are ways for us as teachers, administrators, and parents to help these children and learn that sometimes they do not have these behavioral challenges because they want to but because they do not have the skills to deal with everyday challenges and adjustments. These children just see the black and white and nothing in between. In Dr. Ross Green’s book, he explains a different type of framework that can be used to help these students as well as teachers, administrations and parents on…

The goal of the study conducted was to determine whether DRO or DRA was more effective for decreasing unwanted, problem behaviors that were occurring with four students within a classroom setting. Each student had been referred to a behavioral professional for assessment and intervention purposes due to causing verbal disruption in their classroom. Behaviors exhibited included swearing, making odd noises with their mouths and teeth, along with talking to their peers at inappropriate times, and humming. The importance of decreasing these behaviors was to allow the teacher to spend less time prompting the correct behaviors, and more time engaging in educational activities with the class. These behaviors not only were disruptive, they also had a tendency to serve as the antecedent for other behaviors to occur with others students in the…
