CASE STUDY: SHOE WORLD
Jenifer has been working in Shoe World for 12 years as an assistant manager. Mr. Greg who is the owner of the business has control over everything in the business. The only thing Jenifer has to do is to follow Mr. Greg orders. Every morning, Mr. Greg will come at 6:00 o’clock just to prepare the assignment for the day. Everyday employees will come at 9:00 o’clock and they do not know exactly how their day will look like. Jenifer will come 30 minutes before the other employees just to pick up the assignment from Mr. Greg’s office. When the employees arrive, Jenifer will assign each person with a task for the day as Mr. Greg requested. Mr. Greg

These two leadership styles are more inclusive types. A Laissez Faire leadership style is when the leader allows subordinates not to make organization-wide decisions but to decide how to complete their tasks and projects. A Laissez Faire leadership does not only accept subordinates’ comments, ideas and suggestions, it also encourages their input on decisions and strategies. Workers are trusted and feeling confident to work independently. In this case, the business will run well even the leader is not there because the employees will have enough training and confidence about how to do things. The democratic leadership style has some similarities to laissez-faire leadership, but there are some differences as well. The big difference between the two is how they make decisions. The democratic leadership style is based on mutual respect. This leadership style requires collaboration between leaders and the people they guide. This type of leadership can build an energetic working environment filled with motivated employees who are longing to succeed. Democratic leadership creates an atmosphere of cooperation. Anyone can be a boss but not a leader. Being a leader is more than being a decision maker. I am mother of three. As a leader in my family, I communicate to my children a lot. I train then how to become good citizens in the society. I don’t tell them to do something while myself not doing it too. I try to keep my promises to them. When I delegate a task, I make sure I give enough training on how to do it. As a mom, I know it is not always easy to get your children do what you want them to do as they all have their own personalities. I try to understand them individually. I create an environment of trust between them and me. I know one day, like it or not they are the ones who going to replace me. One day, they will have to coach their children as well. This is exactly what Mr. Greg failed to do as a leader. He did not believe that his employees can replace him on day. He did not make leaders to replace him when he no longer able to
