ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS WHEN CONDUCTING RESEARCH
New Zealand is a multi-racial country. This means that the society has a mixture of people with different cultural and moral views and these need to be considered when conducting research. Research needs to be handled very carefully. The following are some of the Ethical considerations that TMC may need to follow when conducting research.
Firstly, we need to be honest and careful. We should not deceive colleagues, research sponsors or the public. It is a country with over 70 languages and dialects and English words cannot be interpreted in some of these languages. It would be ideal to make the research very easy to understand. An interpreter would be necessary in some cases especially in rural areas.
Zambians are very outspoken. They are not afraid to speak their minds. In most cases, communities come together to speak on issues that might be affecting them or others, whether they know who the party is or not. They take it upon themselves to try and solve the problem. In saying that, there could be more than enough people willing to be interviewed or provide any other information if research is being carried out.
Zambians are very welcoming and warm. There taught to treat guests, male or female, with or without a high social status or anyone else with the respect. Visitors to the more remote rural areas should expect to be met with curiosity. Shaking hands is the normal form of greeting. Gifts are often offered to visitors as a sign of gratitude, friendship or honor. One should never refuse a gift but accept it with both hands. It is also considered disrespectful when addressing someone older by their first name. they are advised to use titles when speaking to elders such as aunt, uncle, grandma(pa) etc. whether or not the parties are biologically
