Fast Food Companies: Facts and Consumer Demand

It is without surprise that the fast food industry is one of the largest industries in the world. Fast food generates over $570 billion in revenue. Also, the amount of growth is astonishing. In 1970, the United states had a revenue of $6 billion in the fast food sector. Just last year in 2015 revenue soared to an impressive $200 billion in revenue. The expected annual growth for the next few years in this sector is about 2.5%. In the U.S alone there are over 200,000 fast food restaurants and it is believed that 50 million people eat at a fast food restaurant everyday. Also, in the U.S hamburger-focused restaurants account for over 30% of industry sales.

Around 53% of men eat fast food once a week compared to 42% of women.
It is also said that young people are most likely to eat fast food compared to older people, and 57% of young people aged 18 to 29 say they do so at least once a week.

It’s obvious that the more fast food restaurants a country has, the more likely its citizens are to be obese. For example, the U.S. has 7.52 Subway restaurants per 100,000 people and obesity rates of 31% for males and 23% for females. Meanwhile in Japan, Subway restaurants are far less common, the obesity rates are 2.9% and 6.4% respectively.
In America, french fries are the most popular fast food. In 1970, french fries exceeded regular potato sales in the United States. In 2004, U.S.citizens ate 7.5 billion pounds of frozen french fries. As seen in the graph above is without doubt that the fast food industry will continue to grow exponentially as people nowadays are very busy and fast food is a fast way to eat for a small amount of money. Some of the facts listed above are very shocking and the thing is that even though people know that fast food is not good for you, they still proceed to consume it fairly regularly.
