CHAPTER 1
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

TARPS recycles tarpaulin waste into bags. The bags are made out of tarpaulin, making it thicker than an average plastic bag and cannot tear apart easily like a paper bag would. Tarpaulin in nature are water resistant therefore the bags will not be affected by wet products and it will not melt when exposed in the rain unlike paper bags. If food was spilt in the bag it would be easier to clean it off or if the shoes put into it are muddy, cleaning the bag would not be a problem. The tarp bag is supposed to be a promotion for recycling. Even if people do not know how to recycle, they may be considered as recycling a tarpaulin into a bag if they bought the tarp bag. It is an eco-friendly bag even if it is made out of tarpaulin because it is recycled.

Konner does this through the form of a animal documentary, characterizing the plastic bag as an living creature throughout the mockumentary. He further exaggerates his point by personifying the plastic bag as "unsure of itself" through a close up shot as it gets blown by the wind across a car park. This portrays the fact that humans leave their rusbish carelessly and that it can not clean up after itself. Additionally, Konner uses long shot to demonstrate the plastic bag flowing towards the ocean. Through this, viewers can see that the humans standing in the scene did not care or glance at the plastic which describes the way we act about our environment.…

An overwhelming number of arguments accumulate when the issue at hand deals with money and the environment. Funds that grocery stores are able to spend at their own discretion. Considering the amount of change bag policies has undergone in recent years, many stores are able to use this revenue stream without fear of consequences.…

Our generation has been told that if we do not recycle, we will live in a world of waste. The world will be destroyed from all the harvesting of resources, and costs will soar because of the expenses that comes from extraction of raw materials. The author of “Recycling make greens go gaga, but it’s a real burden for the rest of us,” William Shughart II, argues the opposite. He says that the reharvesting of the raw material is more cost efficient and more environmentally friendly than the recycling and reprocessing of the once used plastic and glass. Shughart is correct in saying glass is more effective to remake rather than recycle because of the natural abundance of sand.…

Recycling involves using selected materials from garbage in the manufacture of new products, rather than burying the garbage in a landfill. Recycling saves energy and natural resources but not all sorts of plastics can be recycled, leading to a waste of time, money, human and natural resources. It’s better to throw away your trash rather than recycle it because machines cannot sort all types of plastics and plastics that can’t be sorted end up in landfills. Economically, America’s recycling rates are proven to be very low and only few recyclable materials are actually recycled properly.…

Stuff Matters is a book by Mark Miodownik where he explores the different origins and properties of materials that are in our daily lives. The materials around us are taken for granted, thus not many people can answer the question of why the materials look, feel, and act the way they do. A prime example is plastic. Polymers, or plastics, are considered one of the six classes of materials that has changed the world. Plastic is held with high status in the material world because of its extensive formability, giving it properties that allow it to be formed for certain purposes.…
