EUROSPAR Supermarkets operate within a very competitive market firstly because it competes with the larger multiples of Dunne’s Stores and Tesco, with discounters of ALDI and LIDL but also from the independent Retailers who operate under the franchise of a National Retail Brand e.g. Supervalu, Londis and Cost cutter. These are similar Retail Formats operating in the same section of the marketplace and it is from these formats that the biggest challenge comes. This is when stores leave our brand to join another. This can have a devastating effect not only on Retail Sales, National store numbers but also with Brand confidence with remaining retailers. The company’s broad spectrum of retail brands within grocery retailing, including SuperValu, Superquinn and Centra, ensured the operator’s leading position. Musgrave invested heavily during the review period to ensure that its retail brands and private label offerings remained competitive and in line with the prevailing consumer trends. Spar Own Brands offers up to a thirty three percent saving versus the branded alternative. Retailers have “engaged” major brands to produce the own brand product, often to the same specification, at a much lower price. Supplier power has been turned in favour of the retailer through central distribution and own brand product sales increases. The merchandising of the own brand on the lead in on shelves at the expense of the national best seller has increased the sales and “tasting” of the own brand range. The “yellow pack” stigma has disappeared with consumers proud of their spend savings from a high of property worth a few years ago. At SPAR we are lucky to have a complete own brand product range, specification and sales data from Austria and other European countries to base product development on. Within the own brand range now we have three tiers S Budget, Spar own brand and Spar Select or premium range. These operate at a good, better, best ratio in reference to quality and price. During the past seven years BWG operated with two tiers of own brand as consumer demand for a premium option was very low. Since the economy has shown signs of a little recovery BWG has experienced an increase in consumer demand for a more premium own brand range and only this month have launched our Spar Select range at our National Conference in
