MG David H. Petraeus entered Northern Iraq with three distinct strategy goals. His success reflects his management style. MG Petraeus objective of restoring normalcy aided his achievement. Three Strategy Goals
Of MG David H. Petraeus three strategy goals, the first was to provide a secure environment. The City of Mosul is in the Nineveh Province of Northern Iraq. The general guided the 101st Airborne Division into Mosul only to find the city in ruins. Most of the Provinces infrastructure was in disarray. Public utilities were nonexistent. Opportunities for the local nationals to earn an income did not exist. Petraeus needed to address the security of the area before these tasked could start. One of the general’s key initiatives was his daily battle rhythm. As a leader with such an important task, Petraeus’ days were extremely long. He kept a daily schedule that was structured and consistent. He spoke with all of his commanders daily. The general did not micromanage, but he insisted on staying informed.
