On May 1, 2016, a CSX freight train derailed causing a possible spill of the chemical contents it carried. According to the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services department (DCFEMSD), the derailed train in northeastern Washington DC resulted in the leakage of hazardous chemical material by three cars (Washington, 2016). The total amount of cars sent outside the railroad in the derailment incident was however, confirmed to be 14 according to CSX. The possible extent of the hazardous spillage had not been quantified at the time of reporting, however, speculations indicated that the spillage could have been serious, thus detrimental to the environment and a threat to environmental well-being.
