Chris Rock once said, "Wealth is not about having a lot of money; it 's about having a lot of options". Having options are essential building blocks for a coach to create an environment for client development. Brainstorming reveals options that may assist the coachee in achieving their goal. This paper will discuss the preplanning, "O" in the GROW model, rules of brainstorming, and reflection of this live case study.
Preplanning
My goal for this session is to get the coachee to commit to a plan for the command indoctrination program. My plan is to brainstorm during this session, utilizing the five rules, to identity and explore multiple options that will increase the chances for a successful outcome. Rules of Brainstorming
"Regular brainstorming is as critical to an organization as Regular exercise is to your health. It creates a responsive innovative culture." - Tom Kelly
According to Van Valin (2014), brainstorming sessions can be disastrous without rules. The goal of brainstorming is to liberate vice constrain the flow of ideas. He recommends five rules, essential for a positive outcome:
Rule #1: Remove Judgement: All ideas are good. Judgement can create an intimating environment and slow down the process.
Rule#2: Show interest without critique. Replace the 'but ' with 'and '. Foster curiosity through positive and interesting discussion about the idea.
Rule#3: No idea is ridiculous: Think, Say, Write. Record all ideas, despite personal feeling. Give everyone an opportunity to contribute and promote creativity by telling everyone not to hold back or self-judge before …show more content…
If there are plenty of ideas, then there are more choices to consider.
Rule#5: Combine Ideas. New possibilities will open when ideas are used to feed other ideas.
Reflection
This coaching session was a difficult one to gage. Since the indoctrination program involved different departments within the command, I felt that more employees should have been apart of the session. Although, adding more people could have been counterproductive by making the coachee lose the feeling of ownership.
The session seemed a little awkward because we had discussed updating the schedule. Now it feels we took a step backwards by second guessing our previous plan. Needless to say, we made the best out of the situation by discussing the value of involving departmental representatives and the additional options they could bring to the table.
