HP 2020 Objective
Brain Injury Association of Michigan focuses on Healthy People 2020 objective IVP-2.1- Injury prevention. The goal is to reduce deaths that are due to traumatic brain injury by 10 percent. Baseline: 17.4 death per 100,000 population were caused by traumatic brain injuries in 2007. Target is 15.7 death per 100, 000 population (United States Department of Human Service, 2015).
Levels of Intervention
All levels of interventions are addressed by this association. For instance BIAMI is involved in primary prevention through community education, public awareness campaigns, webinar and brochures on preventive measures such as helmet use while riding a bike, motorcycle, snowmobile, scooter, or all -terrain vehicle, sport concussion, texting while driving and making living areas safer for senior by removing tripping hazards, using non slip mats in bathtub and on shower floors, Installing window guards to keep young children from falling out of window and more (Brain Injury Association of Michigan, 2015). Part of the primary prevention efforts include advocacy throughout the year to introduce legislation to train coaches and protect and protect young athletes. The association is equally involved at the secondary level by helping individuals with suspected head injury whether mild or severe get screened and take appropriate steps to reduce the severity of the injury if any brain injury has occurred.
