Case Study Of An ELL Students

Before starting this assignment I thought that it would not be an issue when finding two teachers that have had an ELL student. This was not the case because I had trouble finding two teachers that had taught an ELL student and I believe it was because we live in an area that does not have many ELL students. After asking a few teachers their experiences with working with ELL students, I finally found two teachers that both gave me a great answers to the interview questions. The first teacher I interviewed had an experience in two different placements in Ottumwa. She had the opportunity to work with lower and upper grades, which she said were very different experiences. When I asked about her positive experiences, she said her first time having …show more content…

When it comes to the frustrating parts of having ELL students is not having the resources to help them. She said that the many resources they do offer is an ELL book or companion guide to use, however, they do not always have access to those in our individual classrooms, which can become very …show more content…
She said that this year her ELL student was not picked up at the correct time on an early out day and it was frustrating trying to explain to her the time she needed to come to the school to pick up her daughter. Her biggest fear when it comes to ELL students is that she will that offend them because of something that she says or does. Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. Some of the first things I noticed when I entered the school was how enormous the school’s population is and how the school was mostly Hispanic and African American students. I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. ESE stands for exceptional student education classes.…

Some ELLs have a higher English proficiency than others, so it would not be beneficial for them to be working on the same activities. Students get to learn everything from math, sight words, phonics, writing, language, vocabulary, spelling, and various reading activities at their own levels. Multicultural education is also about cultural awareness and social justice (Bennett, 2014). This site offers the opportunity to learn social studies. They were talking to the teacher in Spanish and English therefore, I wanted to double check if they were ELL and they were ELL students. The first SEI strategy that I noticed that the teacher implemented into her lesson was vocabulary and language development. She first started by going over the ABC’s with her students. They sang the ABC’s song and every one was involved. Then after this she read them the book “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” written by Bill Martin and John Archambault.…

I do not want any of my students to be afraid about coming to school and one of my main goals, as a teacher is to treat each student equally. No matter what difficulties they may face in life, I want them to know that they should always be respected. I want to encourage parents and guardians to be more involved in the students’ school lives because it may make a larger impact at home. I want all of my students to get along and not exclude others based on their skin tone, disabilities, language, etc. Landsman does a great job of treating her students equally and it is obvious that she has taught them to respect one another; sometimes she does not even need to step in because the students handle it…

My cooperating teaching has been very informative this semester with answering questions about ESOL students and how to be an effective educator towards them. In the classroom, she has it set up where there are Spanish books in the library, labels throughout the room, and a special center just for her ELL students to focus on their work. I think that having Spanish books in the classroom is a brilliant idea. ELL students are learning a second language, but that doesn’t mean that we are trying to eliminate their first language. This will show ELL students that educators not only care about their education, but want to involve their first language into the classroom as well.…
