Case Study: New Hope Baptist Church

The study will be conducted at New Hope Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi. New Hope Baptist Church was established in April of 1913. It was composed of seven members and led by Reverend Cassie. Reverend Cassie was succeeded by five other pastors who grew the church and built a sanctuary on Whitfield Mills Road. But as the church continued to expand and with new leadership under Reverend Jerry Young the sanctuary was moved to Watkins Drive, where it is still located. Under the guidance of Reverend Jerry Young the church obtained more members and coined the phrase “a going church with the coming Christ” (“New Hope,” 2013). One function is held in the Fall while the other is held in the Summer, both are led by Sister Shala Edney whom is assisted by approximately fifteen other church members. The Health Education Ministry holds an annual Fall Church Health Fair, which includes a 5K walk/run, healthy snacks and water, education on nutrition, and a health fair. The health fair includes several different tables, which include: eye examinations, hearing test, glucose screening, blood pressure screening, breast cancer awareness, kidney screening, education on dental care, cholesterol awareness, chiropractic table, etc. Members of the church and the community are invited and encouraged to participate in all aspects. Other than the annual Church Health Fair, New Hope also holds an annual weight loss competition with the neighboring church, Anderson United Methodist Church. The competition enlist members of the congregation to sign up for group workout sessions twice a week throughout the course of the summer.
