My culture’s Impact in My Life
“A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people” (Mahatma Gandhi). Everybody has a culture that defines themselves because they share their culture’s values, religions, language, and beliefs to mention some. Culture is what people can identify with and what people represent from their countries. As anyone else, I have my culture too, which is Dominican. I wouldn’t be who I am if it weren’t for my culture and what I have learned from it. However, culture may affect your life in a positive but in a negative way too because all human beings are raised different and with different values and beliefs. In this essay, I will explain the …show more content…
Values are a collection of important things in life and what is consider right and wrong. In my culture, there are different beliefs and practices with values because for some people there are things more important than others. But it all depends on how each individual is raised. My family taught me that in the first place and the most important is God because thanks to him we are alive. Then they taught me that love is important too. They believe that as a person, I have to love myself and love others too such as my family and my closest friends because a person without love would have a miserable life. Also, the family is very important to them because family is what shapes individuals which then become part of a society with their family’s values and share them from one generation to another. My culture does not believe in equality because for example they think that North American are superior to them and that Haitian are inferior. On the other hand, my culture considers wrong when a person has tattoos and piercings because they believe that a person who has values or a decent person would not tattoo their body and would not use piercing (for examples women with piercing in other places than their ears). And people of my culture think in that way because according to them a person with tattoos is kind of an immoral person. For example, if who has the tattoo or piercings is a man, he is a delinquent. But if it is a woman, she is a whore. …show more content…
I do not like when some people believe that their culture is better than my because I think that each culture has its unique characteristics and its different beliefs. When I came here some people made fun of me because of my English and it affected my life because after that I don’t like to talk because I think that the same is going to happen again. This affected me in the past, in my present and probably in my future too because I don’t like to talk in front of other people.
In conclusion, even though I don’t follow my culture beliefs as I probably should, my culture has changed my point of view in life with beliefs, values, body language, norms or rules, and religion. But thanks to my family and culture I am aware of what is wrong and right and I can have my own beliefs based on what I have learned from them. I think that now I am capable of use cultural relativism because I think that I can see the way that people behave from the perspective of their own
