Case Studies Case 1: During my visit to St. John 's Episcopal Cemetery in Valle Crucis, NC, I came across an interesting example of a laser etched image on Charles Dotson 's gravestone. Etched on Charles 's stone was an image of the USS San Diego along with the inscriptions "WWII," "Bronze Star Recipient," and "Brother Our Hero." Initially, I could figure that Charles was a member of the crew of the USS San Diego during his life, and that time was a defining factor of his personal identity. What I also figured was that his siblings were the ones that erected this stone, and that they had some say in what symbols were used. Following my visit to St. John 's, I wanted to learn more about how the USS San Diego figured into Charles 's life, and potentially why his siblings chose this symbol as a means of keeping their connection to their brother viable.…

Introduction Detroit, Michigan is a unique city boasting of an iconic past, a gloomy present, and a potentially bright future. Once one of America’s largest and most thriving cities because of professional opportunities in the automotive industry, Detroit fell to devastating lows after the loss of thousands of jobs from Ford Motor, General Motors, and Chrysler. Detroit is the 18th overall most populated city in the United States, the largest city in the State of Michigan, and recently became the largest American city to file for bankruptcy. Though the city currently faces a laundry list of problems, I believe that Detroit is fully capable of hosting a successful Olympic Game years from now that could help change the overall condition of the…
Historically, the Chippewa Indians placed their male and female members in rigid, gender-specific roles; the men were warriors and protectors, leaving their families to hunt and go to war, while the women tended to hearth and home, raising the children, caring for the home, and planting and harvesting the food they were also responsible for preparing. As this was once also the typical attitude towards gender roles in European-American families, it would seem that the two worlds would naturally blend and accept each other. However, as was typical with most circumstances regarding Native Americans, they were perceived as lazy, ignorant, heathens requiring conversion to Christianity, yet in reality they passed down values of generosity, strength,…
Almost 250 years ago a battle was fought on the Plains of Abraham that proved to change the fate of Canada. Today these plains are still at the heart of Quebec City, one the oldest cities in Canada, and the only walled city north of Mexico. A bustling cultural exhibition of French Canada, Quebec City is known for its stunning architecture—examples of French Colonial buildings and picturesque chateaus. The cold weather of this Canadian city is a star of the show however, as Quebec City is home to the Quebec Winter Carnival, a spectacle of winter celebration that has wowed visitors since 1955.
