2. Based on the urine color and specific gravity, Tracey is able to conclude Max’s hydration status during the different recorded stages. Before he exercises, Max’s pale yellow urine and low specific gravity level suggest that he is quite hydrated during this time. Immediately after exercise his dark yellow urine and high specific gravity suggests that he is dehydrated. Hours after his exercise his urine color and …show more content…
Max’s body was secreting the most ADH immediately after exercising. His concentrated urine with a specific gravity level of 1.035 is evidence of this. ADH targets the collecting duct to increase permeability so it can reabsorb more water. While exercising, Max’s body used ADH to allow for more water reabsorption so that he would stay well hydrated.
4. After intense exercise, protein is normally found in the urine. Yet during times of rest, it is not. This could most likely be due to the body’s metabolism of muscles and blood cells which produce proteins and end up in the blood stream. From there they are filtered out through the kidneys and into the urine. While at rest, the body doesn’t metabolize so it doesn’t let off proteins, therefore none are usually found in urine.
5. Since Max ate an entire large pizza before his urinalysis (otherwise this could have been a sign of diabetes or something more serious), it caused his blood sugar to rise. His kidneys were unable to reabsorb all of the glucose so, instead, it was released in the …show more content…
Max’s pH levels fluctuate from 6.0 before exercise, to 4.5 immediately after exercise, to 5.0 six hours after exercise. This informs Tracey that Max’s kidneys are working to level off his pH to normal levels over time. During exercise, the body produces lactic acid, a waste product which causes the pH to drop. The kidneys release more hydrogen ions which cause the pH to decrease and make urine more acidic while the blood becomes more basic. After exercising, the kidneys don’t release as many hydrogen ions so the urine becomes less acidic.
7. Since Max’s urinalysis data shows that he was well hydrated before exercise (pale yellow urine), I do not believe that he needs to drink more water before he begins. However, since his data shows him becoming dehydrated immediately after exercise (dark yellow urine), he may want to take frequent water breaks during his exercise routine so that his body can remain constantly hydrated and healthy.
8. Angiotensin II has the kidneys boost extracellular fluid which causes blood pressure to rise in two ways. It can cause the posterior pituitary to release its’ storage of antidiuretic hormone which causes water reabsorption in the kidneys. Second, it causes the adrenal cortex to secrete aldosterone which causes the kidneys to reabsorb sodium. Since water follows sodium, it causes more of it to increase blood
