Case Study: Lockport Islamic Community Center

For my regions study, I attended a Muslim worship service in Lockport, NY. I attended a Muslim Friday prayer service. It is traditional during these mandatory services for men to attend and although sometimes some men cannot due to work obligations. This service was a less formal since the setting that took place among several university students in a room that off to the side.
The Lockport Islamic Community center has been in existence in the Western New York area for more than 50 years. The community center was established, with the help of Masjid. Masjid wanted a pray center the could hold a service for over 700 people. An organization hall was also established in 1959 for the community for large gatherings such as Eid prayers or other

Its typical to wear plain white socks and dress paints to service. White socks are typical worn since it represents the cleansing of the soul and body. I was under the impression that most of the men present in the room had been preparing for this service since the morning, as they looked focused and freshly showered, shaved. I found it oddly creepy how focused they were. Before I entered, the person who was serving as my guide for this Friday prayer service told me that I must set foot in the room with only my right foot before the left was permitted. I was told that if I was a woman, it would be necessary for me to go to the far left side of the room, away from the men and presumably out of sight. In many parts of the middle east women are not seen as equals and even simple things such as going to restaurants many families will not sit with each …show more content…
Women are allowed to attend these services on Fridays but for them, this is not seen as essential as it is for men. There is little explanation for why there were no women present, it might be either due to the fact that these are men who knew one another to begin with or that women simply chose not to attend. These vital Friday prayer services are open to those who are non Muslims and wish to learn more or become part of the faith, which made this an optimal setting in which to view this observance. The friend who I am accompanying and who will translate what is said to me explains that Friday is the most important day of prayer for him and that even outside of the service itself, he spends as much time as possible throughout the day in praise so that he can experience the rewards of Allah. I noticed while attending the religious service, that the men were not loud. More surprising they did not speak much. To my understanding on the day I attended worshiping for the gods began and at noon. They all seemed highly focused and introspective; there was little looking around from one to another and it appeared they were preparing themselves for the prayer service ahead. The men, with the exception of the leader, were all dressed in everyday clothes but they looked clean and can be best described as business

The site that I visited was Mercy Hill Church in Greensboro, NC. I went to a sermon, with some friends, that took place on a Sunday night. When we arrived at the church, we stayed together and observed the site. The members of this church all seemed to be within their twenties and thirties; there were a few younger children and a few older women and men, but not many. Most of these people seemed to be from Christian ethnic backgrounds or just unaffiliated with any ethnicity.…

Spanish Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 1. What happened during the services? I arrived at the church a few minutes prior to the service and I was greatly surprised by how well attended the service was. There were dozens of families in a spectrum of Sunday best and work-stained denim jeans and nearly every person wore a yellow and white vest with a red cross embroidered on the lapel. At the entrance there was a small dipping well and although there was no water in it at the moment, (most likely due to the sizeable crowd) people still placed their fingers in the dry well and crossed themselves before entering the chapel and before sitting, they would cross themselves again.…

During the 1880s, the Canadian federal government felt so threatened by the Indigenous inhabitants that they started a cultural genocide by establishing Residential schools with the intent to destroy the Indigenous culture. The negative impact of these institutions continues to affect the Indigenous community till now. In response, the government of Canada, in cooperation with the FNMI community, initiated the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA). The procedures implemented by the IRSSA has, to some extent, helped Residential School survivors move forward from the horrific event and proves to be a testament of the government’s mission in acknowledging its effects on the Indigenous community. One of the initiatives of the IRSSA is the Common Experience Payment wherein survivors are given monetary compensation for the time they spent in Residential schools.…

This Ritual Observation Project will be discussing my observations at Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. I went there on June seventh to gain insight first hand into the Catholic Church’s rituals and beliefs. I will begin by breaking down the entire mass that took place during my observation then I will compare and contrast Catholicism to Baptist Christianity (my religion). When I first entered the area where the mass was to be held at, I began to notice the exquisite detail and the Stations of the Cross, which shows Jesus’ crucifixion. The pictures that show the fourteen Stations of the Cross can be found in my Saint Teresa of Avila Catholic Church PowerPoint presentation.…

In America, there has been a prolonged history of conflict regarding prayer and the use of the bible within the public school system. In the 18th century, the Constitution was written in which it addressed the use of prayer in a school setting in Article six, Clause three. According to Religoustolerance.org, the constitution prohibited the requirement of students to pray in class, allowing the student to excuse themselves from the classroom and step into the hallway when a prayer was being read or recited. While the Constitution permits this, many states still feel that there is an element of "compulsion" involved as a child may be picked on or treated differently by his/her fellow students for excusing themselves from the room during a prayer.…

Richard Sosis is an anthropology research professor with interests in human behavioral ecology. In his article, The Adaptive Value of Religious Ritual, Sosis questions the logic and purpose of the religious acts and rituals from around the world. Sosis looks deeper into the fundamental reasons for the rituals and how it affects the selected community as a whole and its benefits of overall survival. Sosis argues that the group cooperation that is found in these religious ceremonies creates trust and commitment within these groups, and this "membership" reveals who is worthy of this trust and commitment.…
