Wipro Technologies Limited, which was initially started as a manufacturer of vegetable and refined oils, has undergone tremendous changes in its technological structure right through the years. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the company realized the new opportunities in the IT sector and set their foot in the IT and computing industry. This fascinating transformation from a vegetable oil company to global IT service giant was not an easy one. It had to face various issues like lack of knowledgeable resources to adapt to the new and changing technology, fierce competition with many other firms trying to get into this niche domain, no assurance of sustainability in long term etc.
Despite of these challenges, Wipro …show more content…
A strong emphasis was given to building a professional working environment and having a global outlook for business and growth. This led to the innovation of people processes continuously. By giving utmost importance to its people, Wipro has ensured its competency based people processes and demonstrated innovative practices in reducing attrition, increasing development and innovation. But the question remains as how did Wipro bring about all these adaptations in its technology. The solution to this question is depended on the following four building blocks:
• Process decomposition: In order to gain a thorough understanding of the specific business, Wipro aligned its focus on developing the core and non-core competencies. Having the competencies in place, it became easier to tackle the competitive environment.
• Optimal technology innovation: Wipro realized it very soon that surviving in the field of IT would solely depend on how innovative it could be and what impact it would have on its client’s requirements. Thus technologies were developed in order to improve the delivery methods with an aim to become a benchmark for performance to which new IT designs could be …show more content…
Once, Wipro had acquired a strong hold in its technology-driven business solutions, the next big challenge ahead of Wipro was its focus on Quality management. For this, Wipro created a learning environment which led to the implementation of Six Sigma.
Six Sigma is a statistical term that measures how far a given process deviates from perfection. It is named after the process that has six standard deviations on each side of the specification window. It is a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating defects.
Thus, Wipro understood that implementing six sigma concepts would bring rigor in effective upstream processes of the software development life cycle. Implementation of six sigma methodologies would also bring in quantitative understanding, cost savings and performance improvement towards product quality.
With all these benefits on its side, Wipro became the first Indian company to adopt Six Sigma. However, there were certain challenges that Wipro had to face in order to adopt Six Sigma. Some of the key challenges involved were:
• Reduce the data transfer time.
• Reduce the risk.
• Avoid interruption due to LAN/WAN
