Recently, the Alberta petroleum industry has been in an economic downturn likewise, Eden Resources is in financial difficulty. Maintenance is being delayed and the company is cutting corners.
Katy is a P.Eng. registered with the APEGA (the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta) which obliges her to abide by specific laws and ethical principles as a professional engineer. Aware of the financial difficulty of Eden Resources, the role the company plays in the community, and the challenges to find employment as an engineer in the current economic downturn, Katy is in a quandary, and has asked for a recommendation on what she should do.

Eden Resources wants to reduce spending on the plant, while being within safety codes, regulations, and standards. Sour gas is poisonous, corrosive, and explosive in small concentrations, which causes problems to the public. If a sour gas leak were to occur, Eden Resources would face legal problems, lose billions in revenue, and lose their reputation. Therefore, Eden Resources will sufficient money on the sour gas plant to maintain safety regulations, and to keep with the codes and standards, in effort to reducing overall costs of the plant’s
