The foundation of The Sisters of St Joseph drew upon the experience of its co-founder, Julian Edmund Tenison Woods. Woods had founded this organisation in the hopes to be able to aid the growing numbers of people in need during the 1860’s. During this time, there was no such religious congregation that would respond to these widespread needs and, which Woods had seen. In 1866, The first Josephite school was opened in Penola, south Australia, and then in 1867, a second school in Adelaide was opened. Also in 1867, father Woods had written a rule for the sisters, a rule which had a clear form of central organisation which allowed the Sisters to be free to move across dioceses wherever they were needed to help those living in poverty.
