Inez Beverly Prosser was born in Yoakum, Texas on December 30, 1897. Prosser was the eldest daughter and the second oldest of the eleven children of Samuel and Veola Beverly. The Beverlys’ moved many times to find the best education for their children, given that there were few educational opportunities for black students. Prosser’s dedication to her education led her to become the first black woman to receive a PhD in psychology (Warren, 1999). Prosser was also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Inez Prosser graduated as valedictorian of Yoakum Colored High School in 1912. After that she continued her education and received a degree in teaching from Prairie View Normal College, where she also graduated as valedictorian (Warren, 1999) .After college Prosser returned to Yoakum where she taught at segregated schools. After that she went on to become assistant principal at Clayton Industrial School in Manor, Texas, before accepting a position at Anderson High School. During her time at Anderson Prosser taught English and coached for the Interscholastic League. While teaching at Anderson, Prosser met and married Allen Rufus Prosser, who was an elevator operator in Austin. Prosser continued her education and went on to receive a master’s degree in educational psychology from the University of Colorado.
