Grace Baptist Church kindly welcomed my attendance to the first religious service I have been to in over a decade. Each member is actively involved in the church community as well as local charities. Overall positive, the experience enlightened my comprehension of the congregation’s convictions pertaining to religious values and where they are derived from. Pleasantly greeted as well as given a compassionately farewell the members of the church treated me with the utmost respect. Nonetheless, members do not always welcome individuals nicely, such as those within the LGBTQ+ community are not readily accepted as easily.…

The reading for this week consisted of Tanya Erzen’s Straight to Jesus: Sexual and Christian Conversions in the Ex-Gay Movement. Erzen’s work is an ethnography of individuals at “New Hope”, which she states is the oldest ex-gay organization in the United States (Erzen, 2006). Erzen excels at providing historical and social context in her writing along with her ethnographic findings, giving the reader a well-rounded basis to form their opinions from. The “ex-gay” movement is one that is widely known, with ardent supporters as well as extremely influential people opposed to the movement (Erzen, 2006). It is common knowledge that Vice President Mike Pence is known to be a supporter of the ex-gay movement, with people claim he has made statements…

Religion and the LGBT community are two groups that tend to clash; however, in reality there should not be a divider between the two as faith continually proves God’s unconditional love for His children. The essay “Gay Marriage: Our Mutual Joy,” by Lisa Miller, explains to the readers the truths behind the Bible and about God’s love towards homosexuality. In comparison, the article “The Religious People Who Give Us Hope,” by Stevie St. John, displays several religious leaders supporting the LGBT community by sharing the true nature of God. Both “Gay Marriage: Our Mutual Joy” and “The Religious People Who Give Us Hope for Religion” make evident of the unconditional love and acceptance of God that is freely given to all His children.…

Tony Kushner’s Angels in America is a classic drama work that discusses head-on the raw controversies and issues this country has faced during a divided time. With the Reagan Administration in full swing during the 1980s and the breach of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, ideologies such as how one orientated themselves, race, gender, and religious beliefs were something that segregated the country, and are issues that are still consistent today. Kushner has managed to combine all these ideas into a two-part production expressing the battered existence of extremely prevalent diversities that are still relatable over twenty years later. The United States – especially in reflection of the recent election – has been torn over standing issues: Republican versus Democrat, Catholic versus virtually any other religion, heterosexual versus homosexual. Even it seems like these difference, big or small, can tear everyone’s world apart, it is the love for each other or one’s self that pulls it back…

Most people, myself included follow the assumption that everyone we meet is heterosexual. We follow this assumption until we are proven right or we are proven wrong. This assumption is called heteronormativity. It is following the speculation that everyone is straight until proven guilty. Throughout the history of activism within the LGBT+ community, there has been a common goal to promote openness and acceptance. By employing a strategy modeled after the civil rights movement, which mainly focused on assimilation into the dominant institutions as a means of acceptance, activist groups have received their fair share of criticism. In 1997, Cathy J Cohen, a Black lesbian author and social activist, published the groundbreaking article “Punks, Bulldaggers, and Welfare Queens: The Radical Potential of Queer Politics?” a year after a controversy she introduces in the beginning of the essay. The famed Gay Men’s Health Crisis, best known for their active role in the treatment of HIV/AIDS during the AIDS crisis, came under fire after…

As Christians, we believe that the God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are one in the same just with different dimensions. Mistakenly, other religions find it commonplace to try to separate the Holy Trinity. It is difficult for them to grasp that they have the same purpose and they are all God. A sad reality for the Black church and community is its dualistic views on religion, fullness of God, and our relationships with one another. God is a spiritual and sexual existence who created man in his own image; yet the Black church makes a strong distinction between spirituality and sexuality.…
