Case Study: Idiopathic Scoliosis In Female Adolescents

Improved Essays
On August 17, 2014, I was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis, a spinal deformity most common in female adolescents. Before meeting with my orthopedist who officially diagnosed me, I had noticed my torso doing abnormal things. My shoulders weren’t squared, my waist was uneven, my left rib stuck out and my hips were asymmetrical. When the doctor told me I may be an advocate for scoliosis and suggested getting x-rays, I wasn’t surprised. I had been talking about potentially having a spinal deformity for weeks beforehand. The next month, I had an appointment with orthopedist Dr.Kurz. I met with him every three months, taking new x-rays every visit. He monitored the curves in my spine for the next six months. He told me if the curves continued to get worse I would need to get my spine surgically corrected. Lo and behold, it progressed, and I was scheduled for a consultation with a surgeon. My surgeon, Dr.Zaltz, gave my mother and I a lot of information about my scoliosis and why surgery was needed. At first, I wasn’t fond of the idea. Five days in the hospital, many months of not being able to bend, lift or twist. It didn’t sound like my idea of fun. After some thought, I knew getting the surgery done as soon as possible would be the best option. I didn’t want to worry about the curves getting worse than they already were, and I knew I would have an …show more content…

I asked them more than once if they were okay, even though it probably should have been the other way around. They said they were fine, but the second we were told I was heading into the back for surgery, they both burst into tears. I told myself I wasn’t going to cry, but how can you not cry when your parents are

My hips are uneven, my ribcage is twisted, and my waist falls differently on each side of my body. When I trace my fingers down my spine, I follow the winding path of three, 50 degree curves. For most of my adolescence, I strapped myself into a back brace for 23 hours a day. I remember the painful purple bruises from its tight, velcro straps, the embarrassment of being held aside at security lines, the misery of wearing five layers in the summer, and the taunts of one of my classmates who punched me and shouted, “Hard back! Hard back!”…

My Orthopedic Doctor in Seattle Dr. Krengel always said that at 50 degrees it is intended for surgery to be done immediately. Unfortunately Dr. Neal the Orthopedic in Jacksonville didn’t have any openings for surgery until October or November and with my curve growing so fast, the surgery needed to be done as soon as possible. The surgery marked the end of a very long medical journey. It all started when I went to my pediatrician at age sixteen because, unlike other girls my age, I had not experienced my first period. This reflected in the way I looked because I had not experienced the growth which inevitably comes with the change. I tried to wear shirts that would make me feel “sexy” by “hugging the curves”, but instead, these types of shirts hung pathetically because there were no curves to hug. My doctor could not give me a proper diagnosis, so I flew from doctor to doctor.…

I developed a “S” curved scoliosis, over the years as a child until I was 13 years old and the pain in my back infinitely increased to the point where it was unbearable. After being taken into the hospital for an examination I was told my spinal cord was beginning to curve to the right. My doctor believed it would be best to get x-rays for a neurosurgeon to examine. Once I got the results back my neurosurgeon, Dr. Knockels, noticed that my spinal cord was curved at a 45 degree angle. Dr. Knockels explained that having a spinal cord curved to that degree is very dangerous because it could lead a hunched back by time I reach my twenty’s.…
