When the blood flows through vessels at a high rate of pressure for too long causes high blood pressure or hypertension. The vessel walls become damaged over time when these levels of pressure stay so high. Serious health problems can arise when these vessels are damaged. Blood pressure levels of 140 over 90 or higher is considered unhealthy. At one-time hypertension was actually an untreatable condition and considered a serious illness. In ancient Chinese and Indian medicine, they would actually feel a person’s pulse to get an idea of what type of condition a person’s heart was in. If what was called a “hard pulse” was felt, that was usually a sign of hypertension. It wasn’t until 1971, that it was established that treating diastolic hypertension decreased cases of stroke and heart failure and literally improved death rates. Hypertension has been deemed the "silent killer" because a lot of the time there is no symptoms shown. Usually, people do not know they have high blood pressure until they have it checked.
